Damaging sun rays aren’t the only concern when traveling this spring. With many in the U.S. preparing for their annual spring break trips to popular destinations such as Florida, Texas, California and more, travelers should be cautious about the risk of bringing home bedbugs.
Cities on Orkin’s recent list of worst bedbug locations include Phoenix, Los Angeles, Miami and Ft. Lauderdale – four of the top 10 spring break destinations this year according to The Fiscal Times. Whether getting together with your college buddies for some fun in the sun or heading out for a family getaway to the beach, there are tips to protect yourself and avoid waking up with itchy, red bites.
The National Pest Management Association shared these tips for spring travelers:
- At hotels, inspect the entire room before unpacking, including behind the headboard and around furniture and in the closet. Pull back the sheets on the bed and check mattress seams for brown spots.
- Place your luggage away from the walls, and never place on the bed.
- Upon returning home, be sure to inspect your luggage and wash all your clothes in hot water.
We also recommend doing your research of online reviews of your hotel and speaking with the front desk upon check-in if the hotel has practices outlined for infestations. And, for complete peace of mind, consider one of ThermalStrike’s bedbug heat treatments such as the ThermalStrike Heated Luggage or ThermalStrike Ranger, both effective tools to completely eliminate all stages of bedbugs and eggs.
