The Wall Street Journal (which recently had pest issues itself) compiled a list of 10 cities across the U.S. with the worst bed bug problems. Chicago ranked first on the list, and three of the top 10 cities were located in Ohio.
Here’s the bed bug breakdown:
- Los Angeles
- Columbus, Ohio
- Washington, D.C.
- Dallas/Fort Worth
- New York City
Orkin, a national pest control company, noted a 33 percent rise in bed bug issues from 2011 to 2012. The top 10 cities are ranked by the number of bed bug treatments from January through December 2012.
According to the EPA, the rise in bed bug infestations across the country is due to increased travel, inefficient extermination methods, bed bugs’ growing resistance to pesticides and lack of preventative knowledge.
A first step to bed bug prevention is making sure your furniture at home is protected. Protect-A-Bed offers a Bed Bug Protection Kit, including a patented BugLock® three-sided zipper and AllerZip® mattress encasement, which is completely bed bug proof.
