Not Even the Ritz is Safe from Bed Bugs

A guest at the upscale Ritz-Carlton New York on Central Park South in New York recently reported bed bugs in her room.

The guest checked out and even provided a specimen of the bug to hotel management.

A room at the luxurious Ritz can run anywhere from $695 to $4,500 for a suite, proof that bed bugs are not associated with filthy, dilapidated buildings. Bed bugs can thrive in any environment and are skilled hitch hikers.

“Bedbugs are inevitable,” said Scott Geraghty, the hotel’s general manager. “They’re brought in by guests and come in on luggage or things of that nature.”

The guest, Ms. Polanco, expressed concern after finding the bugs in her room. “I haven’t checked my house,” she said. “I don’t know how to inspect my house.”

If you suspect that you may have bed bugs in your home, Protect-A-Bed has a helpful guide on where to look that can be found online. Protecting your mattresses and box springs with encasements can also help protect your sleep zone and stop bed bugs from moving quickly to other locations in your home.

Mr. Polanco should have a bed bug inspecting canine sniff out her house for any bed bugs that might be crawling around! This is another example of how these terrible pests can be anywhere.

Although many people believe that bed bugs infestations are a sign of unsanitary conditions, there are several ways for a home or business (especially hotels) to become infested with bed bugs. People often acquire bedbugs at hotels, motels, and bed-and-breakfasts, both domestically and internationally, and bring them back in their luggage. Sometimes, used or antique furniture can be infested and homeowners may inadvertently bring the pests into their home after buying a piece of antique furniture. Finally, multi-dwelling units such as hostels and dorm rooms are very favorable to the spread of bed bugs. In these cases, bed bug extermination can be difficult and sometimes trained dogs are used to sniff out and locate the various infestations.
