A bed bug infestation temporarily shut down a San Diego fire station on Monday, Oct. 3. Firefighters stayed in nearby hotels or other stations for the night, while fumigators handled the problem.
Firefighters noticed the bugs on Sunday, Oct. 2 and called pest control specialists. Since firefighters routinely visit other stations, the department wanted to handle the problem before it spread.
In an article on NBC San Diego, SDFD Deputy Fire Chief Lorraine Hutchinson explained the importance of eradicating the situation quickly.
“A lot of places that we encounter have them, we take a lot of gear inside, we set the gear on the floor and bed and inevitably we bring them home with us,” Hutchinson said.
Since July, the station has spent $46,000 in exterminator fees and this is expected to be the most expensive extermination yet. Fire officials are now looking at how they can minimize and prevent the problem before it occurs.
